According to Laly James, the series of events began three days prior to the mayoral election when she was called to the DCC office.

Thrissur: Senior councillor Lali James has levelled serious allegations against the district leadership of the Congress, claiming that she was asked for money for party activities in connection with the Mayor decision at Thrissur Corporation. Speaking to the media on December 26 morning, the day of the election, Lali confronted the district leadership, prompting swift action from the party. Later in the evening, she was suspended from the Congress.
According to Lali James, the series of events began three days prior to the Mayor election when she was called to the DCC office. “I was asked whether I knew that funds were required for party activities. I responded that I did not have money in my possession and that I had never used public service to generate funds,” she said. She added that two days before the election, she was called again, with TN Prathapan, MP Vincent, and DCC president Joseph Tajet present.
“I only requested that the first year be sufficient and the remaining four years be given to someone else. I was told that this could not happen, though it might be considered over two or three terms. Eventually, I suggested that if Dr Niji Justin is accepted, the second term be given to former Deputy Mayor Subi Babu, and that I be excluded,” Lali said.
She further alleged, “I have no petty cash to give. I suspect that someone willing to provide party funds or other resources has been chosen.”
Following Lali’s allegations, DCC president Joseph Tajet denied the claims. Lali James had previously been considered for the Mayor post but ultimately did not contest the Congress whip on the morning of the election. However she reached the Corporation Council Hall at 10:30 am and voted for Dr Niji Justin.
KPCC General Secretary Neyyattinkara Sanal confirmed that Lali James’s suspension was based on the district Congress committee’s report.
