The explosion took place at a fireworks manufacturing unit supplying the Thiruvambadi Devaswom Board

Thrissur: A major explosion occurred at a fireworks shed in Mundathikode, Thrissur, leaving locals in shock. Residents described the impact as so powerful that it felt like an earthquake, with nearby vehicles reportedly shaking violently. The incident has so far claimed eight lives, while around 40 people have been injured, according to information available until 6 pm.
The explosion took place at a fireworks manufacturing unit supplying the Thiruvambadi Devaswom Board. Locals said they were taken by surprise by the intensity of the blast. One resident, who was inside a car at the time, said the vehicle shook forcefully due to the impact. “The car was really shaking. It was terrifying. You can imagine how frightening it is when even a Fortuner shakes,” he said.
Another local resident, who was near a house in the vicinity, also described hearing a loud blast that felt like an earthquake. Eyewitnesses said emergency services initially struggled to reach the site due to narrow access roads. Fire and rescue personnel were eventually able to enter the area by breaking down a nearby wall.
Reports from the scene indicate that firework materials continued to explode after the initial blast, making rescue efforts more difficult. Locals further claimed they saw debris scattered across the area, with some reporting the presence of human remains.
Several of the injured, including those with severe burns, were admitted to Thrissur Medical College Hospital. The main person in charge of the unit, Satheesh, who is also the fireworks licensee, is among those injured.
Officials have yet to confirm the exact cause of the explosion. However, residents suggested that extreme heat in the area may have contributed to the incident. Rescue and firefighting operations are ongoing.
