Thrissur: Thrissur Corporation is accused of bypassing the employment exchange and making appointments to temporary posts through the back door. Responding to the allegation, Thrissur Mayor M.K Varghese noted that the Corporation resorts to such appointments only in some emergencies.
As per the rules, all appointments in temporary posts in various government and public sector undertakings should be through Employment exchanges in Kerala.
Last day, Mathrubhumi reported that around 25,000 appointments were made in various government and public sector undertakings this year by bypassing the employment exchanges. Following this, it has now come to light that the Thrissur Corporation had made 350 illegal appointments.
The development also comes at a time when allegations that political appointments are rampant in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation are in the limelight.
Thrissur Corporation only notified the employment exchange of 20 vacancies and has reportedly appointed staff to the remaining vacancies through the back door.
Political appointments have been rampant since Thrissur became a Corporation. To pay their salaries, the Corporation reportedly has to spend around Rs 60 lakh per month.
The Corporation is also accused of failing to comply with an order issued by the Employment Director mandating reservations for temporary staff appointments.
Further, Thrissur Corporation has also failed to follow the directive to have a 6-months break between temporary appointments. Consequently, the Corporation was forced to make 50 workers permanent due to continued tenure after they appealed to the High Court. As a result, 50 candidates awaiting appointments in the employment exchange lost the chance.
