Kakkanad: In a surprising turn of events, the Muslim League extended support to the CPM's no-confidence vote to remove their own vice-chairman from Thrikkakara Municipality.

The acting Vice Chancellor, Muslim League leader A.A. Ibrahimkutty, was ousted from office after the motion received majority votes. Besides the Muslim League, independent councillors backed by UDF also voted in favour of the motion moved by LDF.

Ajitha Thankapan, a Congress lawmaker, resigned as Chairperson a few weeks ago as part of a prearranged agreement within Congress. However, her unwillingness to resign from the UDF-ruled municipality placed the party in a difficult position.

In the midst of this, the UDF felt compelled to back the LDF in its efforts to remove Ibrahimkutty, who had agreed to resign as part of a similar arrangement struck within the League.

Three out of five League councillors backed the move to remove him from office. The resolution was approved by 23 councillors, including independent candidates who contested on the UDF ticket. Congress councillors abstained from voting.
