New Delhi: Veteran CPM leader and former finance minister Thomas Isaac approached the Supreme Court on Thursday seeking to transfer the civil defamation case filed by lottery king Santiago Martin to Kerala. The leader asked the court that the case, which was filed in the Gangtok Court, be transferred to Kerala.
Santiago Martin had filed the defamation suit alleging that certain remarks made by Thomas Isaac in a press conference, while he was the state’s finance minister, were defamatory in nature.
In his transfer petition, Isaac pointed out that he is over 70 years old and faced difficulty in travelling more than 3,000 kilometres to Gangtok as part of the case proceedings. He also asserted that Martin’s allegations in the defamation case were baseless.
Although Isaac has filed the transfer petition in the apex court, the case will be conducted by the state government, top government sources told Mathrubhumi News.
As the alleged defamatory remarks were made during a press conference held as part of the government, the case will be conducted by the government.
Thomas Isaac’s petition was filed by former standing counsel G Prakash. The state legal department will soon issue an order appointing Prakash to proceed with the case.
