Thamarassery: In view of recent accidents and the Christmas and New Year holiday rush, restrictions have been introduced on multi-axle heavy vehicles at Thamarassery Ghat to ease the traffic congestion. Thamarassery police announced that a complete ban on large heavy vehicles will be in force from 9 am to 9 pm daily.

Kozhikode Rural Police further clarified that no heavy vehicles will be allowed through the ghat road during these hours, and the restriction will continue until further notice.

The restrictions have been imposed considering the severe traffic jams witnessed on the pass in recent days and the expected surge of tourists heading to Wayanad during the new year. Additionally, fines will be levied for illegal parking at viewpoints two and four, among other bends along the ghat.

Travel difficulties a persistent issue

Despite existing guidelines and controls, traffic jams and travel difficulties at the ghat remain a recurring issue, as previously reported by Mathrubhumi.

A road accident occurred on the ghat on Sunday afternoon, when a traveller van collided with the rear of a tourist bus near the first bend, causing a long delay in traffic flow. Passengers sustained only minor injuries.

With the Christmas–New Year season underway, traffic congestion at the ghat has become routine, with prolonged jams reported over the past several days.

The Human Rights Commission has urged the Kozhikode and Wayanad District Collectors to intervene urgently and find a permanent solution to the congestion.
