Malappuram, Kerala: A Class 5 student in Malappuram’s Kalpakanchery has allegedly suffered a fracture in her hand after a teacher beat her with a cane for allegedly not paying attention in class.
Police have registered a case against the teacher, identified as Belraj from Vadakara, under provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act following a complaint filed by the child’s family.
The 10-year-old girl alleged that the teacher hit her with a cane, resulting in a fracture to a bone in her hand.
Student alleges assault after returning from leave
The incident reportedly occurred on the student’s first day back at school after she had taken a few days’ leave due to fever.
According to the statement given by the child, the teacher approached her from behind and struck her with a cane after accusing her of not concentrating during class.
The girl reportedly told the teacher that she was suffering severe pain in her hand after the incident. However, she alleged that she was asked to continue writing with the injured hand.
The student also informed authorities that the teacher had allegedly beaten both boys and girls in the class on previous occasions.
Teacher allegedly took student home after incident
Later in the afternoon, the teacher reportedly took the child back to her home.
The teacher allegedly informed the family that the child had started crying after she was punished for not paying attention in class and said there was no serious issue.
However, the family noticed swelling and discolouration on the child’s hand. They immediately took her to a hospital, where an X-ray examination confirmed that she had suffered a fracture.

The family has approached the police and also submitted a complaint to the Child Rights Commission regarding the incident.
Police began action against the teacher after recording the injured student’s statement.
The school authorities have not yet issued an official response regarding the allegation.
