Kottayam: The Syro-Malabar Church has lashed out at Muslim League for their stand in the economic reservation. The criticism was expressed in the editorial page article published in 'Deepika' daily. The article was written by Changanassery archbishop Joseph Perumthottam.
About 27 percent of the population in the state are the non-reservation categories who have never enjoyed any benefit of reservation. It is really sad to see some community forces opposing the reservation for the economically weaker sections of forward communities. What makes them think that nothing should be given to others even if they are already served everything, the article pointed out.
The article also evaluated the stand taken by BJP, Communist parties and other political parties on the same matter. It also criticized that the Muslim League and similar groups are opposing economic reservation not on the basis of any ideology. Only two MPs of Muslim League and one MP of AIMIM had voted against the bill on economic reservation in the parliament. This is a proof for their communal stand, it stated.
The editorial article also criticized Congress for not being able to support their stand at national level. The party seems to have no control over its MLAs who have different opinions. It is doubtful if the party can release an election manifesto. They are likely to form an ally with even the Welfare Party of the Jamaat-e-Islami, the article criticized.
