Kollam: The port department and the police launched a surprise raid over complaints of illegal houseboats and other boats operating in Ashtamudi lake.
In raids conducted in Ashtamudi, Prakkulam, Sambranikodi, and Munroe Island, the officials identified boats which are operating illegally. A fine of Rs 3 lakh was slapped on 12 boats for not having registration, survey and license.
Meanwhile, the authorities also issued warnings and notice to some Shikari boats. The raids were spearheaded by the Kerala Maritime Board with the help of the police.
Operators of some houseboats fled the scene after learning that a raid was ongoing in the area. It is learnt that the raids will continue in the coming days to nab violations in the houseboat tourism sector.
