New Delhi: The Union Government has blocked websites and Telegram channels that were circulating and facilitating the spread of pirated copies of films. A total of 1,263 websites and 4,996 Telegram channels have been shut down as part of nationwide measures against digital piracy. Union Minister of State and actor Suresh Gopi was informed of this action in a response letter from Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

Suresh Gopi had recently written to the Central Government requesting strict measures to curb movie piracy. In response, Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw sent a letter to Suresh Gopi detailing the actions taken. The Centre acted under the provisions of the Cinematograph (Amendment) Act 2023, which strengthened the legal framework to prevent online piracy and copyright infringement.

In his letter, Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that the government recognizes the severe impact of piracy on the film industry. The legal framework has been made more robust, and the amended law helps in taking action against platforms violating copyright laws. A dedicated cell has been set up under the Ministry to resolve grievances, and a special anti-piracy portal is being developed to coordinate complaints and take swift action. The Minister added that stringent steps would continue to be taken to clamp down on piracy.

Suresh Gopi had earlier urged the Centre to intensify action, describing film piracy as one of the biggest challenges facing the Indian film industry.
