The Supreme Court has directed the issuance of a new notice in the Peerumedu election case following the death of sitting MLA Vazhoor Soman
New Delhi: The Supreme Court has ordered the issuance of a new notice in the Peerumedu Assembly election case under the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
The direction comes after the death of Peerumedu MLA Vazhoor Soman, while a petition filed by Congress candidate Cyriac Thomas seeking to nullify the election remained pending before the apex court.
The bench, comprising Justices Surya Kant, Ujjal Bhuyan, and N.K. Singh, instructed that fresh notices be served to the remaining four respondents in the case — S. Rajan, Biju Thomas, Gopalakrishnan, and Soman Kunjukunj — in accordance with Section 116 of the Representation of the People Act.
The Supreme Court also directed its registry to issue a public notice under the same section to allow any other interested parties to come forward and seek to be impleaded in the matter. The bench emphasised that all procedural steps must be completed within two weeks.
Senior Advocate Narendra Hooda and Advocate Aljo K. Joseph represented Cyriac Thomas in the proceedings.
