The awareness campaign is being prioritised as part of the broader waste management initiative

Alappuzha: The Suchitwa Mission has urged residents to stop the practice of burning dry leaves lying in their yards. Though this directive was issued earlier, the mission has now begun informing households directly through the Haritha Karma Sena. It is only a request. The warning is clear: not just plastic and other waste, but dry leaves too should not be burned.
Burning leaves contributes to air pollution. The smoke releases particulate matter and carbon monoxide, both of which can harm air quality and cause respiratory illnesses.
Unlike plastic waste, there is currently no statewide system for collecting dry leaves from households. However, in public spaces, dry leaves are used to produce compost at aerobic waste treatment units. The Suchitwa Mission recommends that leaves from homes also be used in similar eco-friendly ways.
Leaves can be made compost by digging a pit in the yard and storing them for at least 40 days. As the leaves decompose, they enrich the soil with essential nutrients. Having two pits allows residents to alternate and manage the process more effectively. Still, the challenge lies in lack of space in urban homes.
Burning leaves in public areas can attract a fine of up to ₹5,000. However, no fines are currently imposed for doing in private residences—unless a complaint is received, in which case action may be taken.
The awareness campaign is being prioritised as part of the broader waste management initiative. Officials from the Suchitwa Mission said that they are considering stepping up awareness efforts specifically against leaf burning.
