Idukki: A Nepalese success saga has been penned in golden letters in Thankamani, with Gokul Veerendra Prasad, a Nepalese student, achieving an A Plus grade in all subjects, including Malayalam, in the Kerala Higher Secondary Examination.
Gokul, son of Nepal natives Veerandra Prasad and Meena, passed Plus Two in Commerce with 96.5 percent mark from St Thomas Higher Secondary School at Thankamani. Gokul’s schooling was totally in Kerala.
Mathrubhumi too was there to impart Malayalam lessons
Gokul’s father Veerendra Prasad had come to Kerala 30 years ago in search of a job. He began his career as a cable TV operator at Poonjar. Later he moved to Cheruthony and started a glass shop before marrying Meena. They settled in Thankamani where Gokul and his sister Gopika were born.
Both Gokul and Gopika were admitted to a school there. On learning Malayalam letters, the children started reading Mathrubhumi daily. Soon they started subscribing to the daily. Mathrubhumi has been a family member for them for the past 10 years.
The family members also maintained that Mathrubhumi had a great influence on the duo’s Malayalam proficiency.
Meanwhile, Veerendra Prasad and Meena also learned Malayalam.
Even in the Xth standard, Gokul had secured A Plus in Malayalam along with eight other subjects. However, he missed out on achieving A Plus in one subject that year. He compensated for it this year by attaining A Plus grades in all subjects.
Gokul also helps his father Veerendra Prasad at the glass shop, which is attached to their house, on holidays and study breaks. Gokul is now planning to join ACCA course. His sister Gopika is a tenth standard student at St Thomas School in Thankamani.
