Palakkad: Electricity Minister K Krishnankutty on Tuesday made it clear that the electricity rates will have to be hiked if the shortage of rain continues in the state. The minister said there is not enough water in the dams in the state. However, the final decision regarding the hike will be taken in the KSEB board meeting scheduled to take place on Wednesday.

“See, if it rains, it’s ok. But if it does not, the electricity rates will have to be hiked, there is no other option. The board can only distribute electricity at the rate at which it purchases it. However, the authorities are putting in their best efforts to ensure that the consumers do not bear the brunt of the crisis situation,” said the minister.

It should be noted that due to a shortage of water in the dams across the state, KSEB will be forced to purchase additional electricity from outside. The prices will be fixed in the meeting scheduled on Wednesday.

Post the meeting, a final decision regarding hiking the electricity prices will be taken after properly analysing the situation, and also by taking into consideration the recommendations of the regulatory commission.
