Edappal (Malappuram): The locals stopped a vehicle carrying 2250 kg stale fish here on Sunday night. Later, the food safety officials arrived at the spot and disposed of the contents.

The lorry was carrying stale fish from Gujarat. According to the report, the vehicle got lost on its route to Kunnamkulam market in Thrissur and ended up in a rural village.

The fish was orginally brought for sale at Kozhikode. However, the merchants here refused to purchase them, claiming they were stale. The vehicle then headed to Kunnamkulam but got lost near Kandanakam-Anakkara Road at Edappal around 8 p.m.

The villagers halted the vehicle to inspect its contents after a foul smell arose from it. However, a verbal spat ensued between the locals and the vehicle operators.

Later, the police and health officials arrived and inspected the vehicle. According to officials, the stale fish, stored in 40 thermocol boxes, was several days old. The fish was later buried in a land nearby.
