After facing widespread criticism for his comment that he didn’t know singer Vedan, MG Sreekumar has come forward with a clarification. He stated that he was only speaking about himself and was unhappy over the statement being twisted out of context. Sreekumar was responding to criticism from lyricist Mridula Devi S, who posted her remarks on Facebook.

The controversy began after Vedan was arrested in a cannabis case. Responding to a media channel during that time, Sreekumar had said that he didn’t know Vedan. He had also said that his only "high" is the applause he receives from the audience while he sings songs. He had further added that music is his only intoxication, and he does not use any other substances.

The comment sparked huge backlash on social media. Mridula Devi shared a photo of Vedan and criticised Sreekumar, saying: "Even if you don’t know Vedan, Vedan will know you. More than the singer Sreekumar, people like you - who pollute the backwaters by dumping waste and blame it on a maid, and the ignorance you feign - are the main theme of his songs."

In response to this, MG Sreekumar clarified:

"A channel asked me whether it was right for singers to perform under the influence of drugs. I responded only about myself. I’m upset that the media had distorted it. I truly do not know Vedan (Hirandas Murali). I’ve never met him. I’ve not seen his shows in person. I have seen parts of his music on Facebook. He is a singer with good public support. I wish him well. I wish all the best to him and his band."
