Shoranur train delays to ease: Railways begins 3.40-acre land acquisition for double track

Ottapalam: The Railways has begun the process of acquiring land for track doubling near Shoranur to address the frequent detention of trains before they enter Shoranur Railway Junction.

A survey has been completed to acquire 3.40 acres of land. The land is being acquired from 43 parties, including the Shoranur Municipality, covering 49 survey numbers. A notification regarding the acquisition has been issued.

A new railway bridge is currently being constructed across the Bharathapuzha. The land being acquired is the stretch from the area around the bridge in Shoranur-1 village to Shoranur station. Land is also being acquired as part of the ongoing yard remodelling at Shoranur.

Single-line stretch towards Palakkad and Thrissur

There is currently a single-line stretch extending about one kilometre each towards Thrissur and Palakkad from the Shoranur yard. Around 90 trains pass through Shoranur every day.

When a train approaches from the Palakkad side while another train is travelling in the opposite direction, one of the trains has to be detained to allow the other to pass.

Trains approaching from the Palakkad side are usually detained at Mannanur or near Bharathapuzha station, while trains coming from the Thrissur side are held at Vallathol Nagar station.

New bridge expected to ease train delays

The new bridge is expected to resolve the need to detain trains approaching Shoranur station from the Thrissur side. The track-doubling project is also expected to help increase train speeds and improve rail operations through the junction.
