Kozhikode: Clashes erupted at Kozhikode Fathima Hospital on Saturday night after a doctor was beaten up by the relatives of a woman alleging lapses in the death of her newborn baby.
As per reports, senior cardiologist Dr PK Ashokan fell unconscious after he was thrashed by the woman’s relatives. The patient’s family had earlier levelled allegations against the doctor who treated her.
Apparently, a 15-member gang stormed into the hospital alleging that the CT scan results of the woman, undergoing treatment at the hospital, were being delayed and destroyed the window panes of the hospital.
Dr Ashokan was beaten up when he attempted to stop the protesters. The assailants also alleged that the hospital authorities were hiding information regarding the death of the baby. The Nadakkavu Police have registered a case into the incident.
The hospital authorities said that the woman had infection, when she arrived for delivery, and all efforts were taken to save the child.
Meanwhile, Minister for Health Veena George condemned the incident and assured strict action against the perpetrators.
Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a strike and doctors in Kozhikode will boycott work (OP) from 6 am to 8 pm on Monday. IMA alleged that the government's assurances remain as words only. The association also warned of state-wide protest, if there are no proactive interventions.
