Rs 721 cr spent for NH construction; Rs 800 cr collected at Paliyekkara toll plaza so far

The National Highway Authority's documents state that Rs 721.21 crore was spent for the construction of the NH while a total of Rs 800.31 crore was collected from the public till May 2020.

Thrissur: It has come to light that Rs 80 crore which is more than the actual expense of national highway construction was collected from the public as toll at Paliyekkara toll plaza so far.

The documents proving this has been revealed and as per contract, toll collection can be continued for 8 more years. The National Highway Authority's documents state that Rs 721.21 crore was spent for the construction of the NH while a total of Rs 800.31 crore was collected from the public till May 2020.

Paliyekkara toll collection started on February 9, 2012. They have collected about Rs 100 crore as toll every year since then. According to rules, the toll should be reduced if the amount spent for the NH construction was recovered. However, no such reduction has been made here. As per statistics, 12 crore vehicles passed through this plaza paying toll within last 8 years.

The company has permission to collect toll till 2028. If the toll collection continued in the present trend, they can collect Rs 1200 crore in the coming years. When they collect toll from public for the allowed period, the company will get about Rs 2000 crore whereas the actual expense was only Rs 721.21 crore.
