Kasaragod: The Kerala government has filed an appeal in the High Court against the trial court's verdict acquitting those accused in the Riyas Maulavi murder case. 

Riyas Maulavi, a 34-year-old madrassa teacher from Choori near Kasaragod, was found murdered in his room in the mosque on March 20, 2017. 

In its appeal before the high court, the Kerala government argued that the findings of the trial court acquitting the accused in the case are weak. The government contended that the trial court's order was shocking and that there was sufficient evidence in the case. 

Last week, Kasaragod Principal Sessions Court acquitted three RSS activists in the case, saying the prosecution was not able to prove that the accused had any kind of enmity with the Muslim community. Judge K K Balakrishnan acquitted Akhilesh, Nidhin, and Ajesh, all three residents of Kelugudde, in the case.

Facing criticism from the Congress-led UDF and BJP, the LDF government came out with a quick decision to approach the high court against the verdict.

The prosecution argued in court that the accused's hatred against the Muslim community was the reason for the murder. However, the court observed that the prosecution had completely failed to prove the allegation.
