Kochi: Efforts are underway to rescue an elephant calf that fell into an abandoned well in Illithodu, Malayattoor.
The incident happened in the wee hours of Friday. The calf fell into a 12-ft deep well situated at a plantation here. Initially, the locals couldn't approach the well due to the presence of other elephants.
The locals claimed that the elephant herd had been destroying crops on a regular basis for the past few days.
The police and fire force unit arrived at the spot and commenced rescue operations. Meanwhile, the locals staged a protest against the threat posed by the elephants in the area.
