Ottapalam: No immediate action will be taken against large vehicles (stage carriages), including buses, that have not replaced unauthorised cameras installed in their vehicles. Although the earlier deadline had expired, the announcement of elections prevented the State Transport Authority from issuing further orders, which has come as a relief to vehicle owners. A final decision will now be taken only after the new government assumes office. Until then, the status quo will continue.

The directive had mandated the installation of three cameras—at the front, rear, and inside—of large vehicles, including private buses. However, many operators installed cameras even before clear specifications were issued regarding the type of cameras required.

Some operators also installed cameras without adhering to the guidelines. Later, the department issued strict instructions to replace them. Only cameras approved by agencies such as ARAI, ICAT, and CIRT are permitted.

It had also been directed that these approved cameras must be installed by March 31 for purposes including vehicle fitness certification. Citing the financial burden of replacing already installed cameras, a vehicle owner had approached the court.

Although the court issued directions, the election announcement delayed further action from the Transport Authority. As per the Motor Vehicles Department, the current situation will continue until a new order is issued.
