Malappuram/Kozhikode: The five people who died in a car accident in Ramanattukara on Monday morning were going to receive the gold smuggled from Dubai via Karipur airport, it is learnt.
2.330 kilogram gold worth Rs 1.11 crore was seized from Malappuram native Muhammed Shefeek (23) who landed at the airport on Monday morning. He came from Dubai in Air India Express flight at 2.30 am.
The gold was seized from him during an inspection by Customs Air Intelligence unit. Gold was hidden inside coffee maker machine. Shefeek was arrested and remanded for 14 days. The Customs hinted that the gang from Palakkad came to collect the smuggled gold from Shefeek.
The mishap occurred at Ramanattukara on Monday morning at 4.45 am. A Bolero car collided with a lorry. The deceased were identified as Palakkad Cherpulassery and Pattambi natives Muhammed Sahir, Nasar, Subair, Assainar and Thahir.
It is learnt that a gang from Kannur also reached the place to rob the gold from the Palakkad gang. However, both these gangs were unaware that Shefeek was nabbed at the airport.
Later, when the Palakkad team decided to return, they met with Kannur gang and clashes erupted between them. Following this, a chasing occurred and this resulted in the accident, it is hinted.
Rs 3.5 crore worth gold and gold compound was seized at Karipur airport on Sunday. Following this, checking was intensified and 2.5 kilogram gold was found on Monday.
