Pathanamthitta: Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who is in Kerala for a couple of events, on Wednesday attended the closing ceremony of the Sugathakumari Navathy celebrations, marking the 90th birth anniversary of the late Malayalam poet, environmentalist, and human rights advocate Sugathakumari. Speaking at the event, Singh praised her contributions, describing her as a compassionate soul who channelled her sensitivity and poetic brilliance into driving societal change.
“Poets are inherently compassionate and empathetic. When a poet channels this compassion beyond verse to effect real societal changes, a sensitive soul like Sugathakumari emerges,” Singh said. “She realised the power of poetry to bring people together for a common good. I pay my deepest respect to Sugathakumari, a dedicated environmentalist and human rights advocate who lived selflessly for others.”
Highlighting her unwavering commitment to environmental conservation, Singh reflected on the ongoing relevance of her legacy. “As her 90th birthday celebrations come to an end, it is important to reflect on her remarkable contributions to the environment, conservation, and climate change. Kerala’s devastating floods in 2018 and the recent Wayanad landslides are stark reminders of ecological fragility. Sugathakumari warned of these changes decades ago. Her call to action was not only poetic but a clarion call to maintain the delicate balance of nature for future generations,” he said.
Singh also underlined the importance of inclusive and sustainable development for India’s future. He stressed that the country’s rapid development must be equitable and environmentally responsible. “India’s consumption should be need-based and not greed-based,” Singh stated, urging behavioural changes to achieve sustainability. He called for abandoning the “use-and-dispose economy” to ensure a climate-resilient future.
Sugathakumari, who passed away in December 2023 due to COVID-19, was one of the most celebrated poets in Malayalam literature. Born in Aranmula on 3 January 1934, her literary achievements include notable works such as 'Pathirappookal' (Flowers of Midnight), 'Raathrimazha' (Night Rain), 'Manavahridayam' (Heart of Humanity), and 'Irulchirakukal' (Wings of Darkness). Her accolades include the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award, Odakkuzhal Award, and Vayalar Award.
Beyond literature, Sugathakumari was a dedicated activist. She founded the Prakrithi Samrakshana Samithi, an organisation focused on environmental conservation, and Abhaya, a home for destitute women. She played a vital role in several environmental movements across Kerala and beyond.
