The warning indicates the likelihood of isolated spells of heavy to very heavy rainfall across different parts of the state.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a five-day rainfall forecast for Kerala, placing several districts under orange and yellow alerts between June 10 (Wednesday) and June 14 (Sunday), 2026. The warning indicates the likelihood of isolated spells of heavy to very heavy rainfall across different parts of the state.
Orange alert for isolated very heavy rainfall in central districts
The IMD has issued an orange alert for selected districts, warning of isolated very heavy rainfall during specific days.
On June 11 (Thursday), the alert covers Idukki, Ernakulam and Thrissur. On June 12 (Friday), it extends to Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam.
As per IMD classification, very heavy rainfall refers to 24-hour precipitation ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm. The department has clarified that the expected rainfall is likely to occur in isolated pockets rather than uniformly across entire districts.
Short-duration intense spells remain a possibility during the alert period, with localised impact expected in vulnerable areas.
Yellow alert issued across multiple districts over five days
A wider yellow alert has been issued across several districts from June 10 (Wednesday) to June 14 (Sunday), indicating the likelihood of isolated heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
On June 10 (Wednesday), the alert covers Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod. On June 11 (Thursday), it includes Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Palakkad and Malappuram.
On June 12 (Friday), Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Thrissur are under warning. On June 13 (Saturday), Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod are included. On June 14 (Sunday), Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram come under the alert.
The IMD defines heavy rainfall under yellow alert conditions as 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm in 24 hours. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning have also been indicated during the forecast period.
IMD explains rainfall intensity and alert classification
The IMD has outlined the classification of rainfall intensity used in issuing alerts.
Very heavy rainfall, corresponding to orange alert conditions, refers to rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm within a 24-hour period. Heavy rainfall, under yellow alert, ranges between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm in 24 hours.
The forecast also includes the possibility of isolated thunderstorms with lightning across several districts. Rainfall distribution is expected to remain uneven, with intermittent spells in different locations rather than continuous rain.
Possible disruption to educational institutions during heavy rain
Educational institutions in areas experiencing heavy to very heavy rainfall may remain closed if district authorities issue official orders based on local conditions. Students and parents have been advised to follow only official updates from district collectors and verified communications from schools and colleges for confirmation regarding closures or schedule changes.
