Despite the wet weather, temperatures remain slightly warmer than usual, with both day and night temperatures hovering a few degrees above the seasonal average.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for five districts today, Sunday, June 14. Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam and Kasaragod face alert for isolated but heavy downpours. These areas are expected to receive between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm of rain within a 24-hour period. While the sun might peek through at times, the threat of sudden, intense showers remains high.
Weekly outlook and gusty winds
The rain is not a one-day event. From today through June 20, Kerala and Mahe are set to experience "fairly widespread to widespread" rainfall.
It is also expected to be a blustery day. Strong surface winds are predicted today, with gusts potentially reaching speeds of up to 50 kmph.
Recent weather reports show that rain has already arrived in some parts, with Angadipuram in Malappuram recording 7 cm of rainfall in the 24 hours leading up to Sunday morning.
Despite the wet weather, temperatures remain slightly warmer than usual, with both day and night temperatures hovering a few degrees above the seasonal average.
Safety guidance for travellers and farmers
Those planning to visit Kerala's scenic hill stations or commute through urban centres should remain alert. The IMD warns that heavy rain could lead to localised flooding on roads and waterlogging in low-lying areas, potentially increasing travel time.
Visibility on roads could also drop during heavy spells.
Farmers have been advised to take immediate precautions to protect their livelihoods.
It is essential to drain excess water from fields growing banana, coconut, cardamom, ginger and vegetables.
Banana plants, in particular, require additional staking support to prevent them from toppling in strong winds.
Experts have also advised against transplanting paddy during heavy spells of rain.
For those heading to the coast, while there is no total ban along the Kerala coast, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the Gulf of Mannar and the Comorin area until June 19 due to rough seas.
Advisory on possible school closures
The present IMD forecast suggests the possibility of temporary disruptions to normal life. District authorities may issue specific orders regarding school and college holidays on Monday (June 15) if there is any significant change in the rainfall pattern in the coming hours. Students and parents have been advised to rely only on official updates from district collectors and verified notices from educational institutions regarding holidays, closures or schedule changes.
Monsoon progress continues
The southwest monsoon is making steady progress across the Indian peninsula.
Forecasters indicate that conditions are favourable for the monsoon to advance further into more parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh over the next four to five days.
For now, residents and visitors have been advised to keep umbrellas handy and stay updated on local weather warnings to ensure a safe week ahead.
