The Shoranur–Nilambur MEMU will begin stopping at Tuvvur station from Wednesday following platform extension, easing commuter difficulties and improving rail connectivity in Malappuram district.

Malappuram: The Shoranur–Nilambur MEMU train will now stop at Tuvvur railway station following the extension and renovation of the platform, ending months of inconvenience for local commuters.
Earlier, railway authorities had denied a stop at Tuvvur, citing safety concerns due to the short platform length. The halt was approved after the platform was extended and upgraded over a four-month period, and officials confirmed that there is now no operational risk. The MEMU service will begin stopping at Tuvvur from today.
The decision comes after protests by local residents, following the introduction of the MEMU service in August, which had bypassed Tuvvur station. The lack of a halt had forced passengers to travel to Melattur or Vaniyambalam to board the train, causing hardship for daily commuters.
Tuvvur railway station serves as a key transit point for people from nearby hilly areas, including Karuvarakundu, and is the only station on the route intersected by the Palakkad–Kozhikode Greenfield Highway.
Following repeated requests from local residents, the Tuvvur Grama Panchayat and the area MLA successfully convinced railway authorities to approve the halt.
Train schedule
The MEMU departing Nilambur at 8:35 pm will reach Tuvvur at 9:24 pm. Return journey will start from Nilambur at 3:10 am and reach Tuvvur at 3:30 am. The train is expected to reach Shoranur by 4:20 am. This service will provide seamless connectivity with the Shoranur–Ernakulam–Alappuzha MEMU departing at 4:30 am and the Chennai–West Coast SF Express leaving at 4:50 am.
The Nilambur–Shoranur MEMU will also depart for Kannur at 5 pm.
Earlier, the absence of night train services to Nilambur had posed major challenges for passengers.
