Kollam: A complaint has been lodged alleging that a principal was denied entry into school for wearing a churidar. The incident occurred at Eswaravilasam Higher Secondary School, Neduvathur, Kottarakkara. The principal Sindhu S. Nair, was stopped at the school gate by a security guard. The teacher alleged that the guard told her he was acting on the instructions of the school manager.
The principal stated that she was prevented from entering the school solely because she was wearing a churidar. As she was unable to gain entry, she staged a protest by sitting on the ground in front of the school gate. The police arrived and made her enter the school.
However, the school management denied the allegations. The school manager clarified that there is no restriction on what attire teachers can wear to school and that no instruction was given to prevent her entry. The manager said he had not given any such direction and expressed confusion over why the principal would make such an allegation.
Given that girl students at the school attend classes wearing churidars, questions are being raised about whether a teacher holding a responsible position in the institution does not have the freedom to wear clothing of her choice. There is also a need for greater clarity on whether any other form of dispute exists between the management and the principal.
