Alappuzha: Broiler chicken prices are on the rise following the Onam season. The reason for this is the shortage of chicken in the markets due to a decrease in production. Another reason is the unavailability of supply from other states.

In previous years, the price of chicken around this time of the year was Rs 120 per kilo. Many people try to avoid non-vegetarian food during Onam season. However, this time, although out-of season, the prices continue to rise.

The current rate of chicken in Alappuzha is Rs 140 per kilo. There might be regional differences in this price. The price of chicks have also risen. Chicks now cost Rs 40-50 whereas it was Rs 13-18 three weeks ago. Although this is a relief for farmers, traders are worried of significant market movement if  chicks are purchased at this rate.

Since supply is low, the price hike is implemented on the already available stock of chicken. Traders union said that the prices rose a few days after Onam and that the demand increased by the fact that holidays are still going on in the state.
