Kollam: A recent study on bottled water has revealed some disturbing facts for experts to consider. According to the study, plastic microbeads were found in the bottled water of 10 major brands.

The study revealed that, on average, there were between three to ten microbeads per liter. Different types of plastic were found, including fibers, fragments, films, and pellets. According to the data, an average of 153.3 plastic particles enter a consumer's body annually through bottled water. This study, which focuses on bottled water sold in Kerala, was published in the international scientific journal Springer Nature's Discover Environment.

The study confirmed the presence of eight different types of polymer particles in the samples, with fibers being the most common, constituting 58.928%. Approximately 35.714% of the total particles were red in colour. The analysis suggests that the fibers found in the samples may have originated from untreated water sources, while others could have mixed in from the components used in water purification or from the bottles used for packaging.

Microplastic particles have been detected in soil, water, food, air, and across living organisms, including human body. The study suggests that, on average, 240 particles are even inhaled daily by humans. This research highlights the need for better quality control processes in the production of bottled water. The study emphasizes the importance of joint efforts between individuals, industries, and policymakers to address these issues. It also stresses the need to reduce plastic use and ensure that it is scientifically processed after use.

Professor Dr. P.J. Sarlene, Head of the Department of Zoology at Fatima Mata National College, Kollam, who led the study, pointed out that the research underscores the importance of responsible plastic use and proper recycling after use.
