A woman is battling for her life after allegedly consuming acid from a sealed bottle of drinking water during a visit to a jewellery shop in Uttar Pradesh's Hapur, police said.

CCTV footage of the incident has surfaced, while investigators are trying to establish how a bottle containing acid ended up being sold as packaged drinking water.

The incident took place on Friday (July 10) evening in Hapur's Arjun Nagar locality, where the woman, identified as Riya, had gone to buy jewellery. Feeling thirsty, she asked for water, following which a staff member at the jewellery shop purchased a sealed bottle from a nearby shop and handed it to her.

Police said the woman took a sip soon after opening the bottle but immediately complained of a severe burning sensation. Realising something was wrong, she rushed out of the shop and spat out the liquid.

She was first taken to a nearby hospital before being referred to a higher medical facility as her condition deteriorated. She remains under treatment, according to reports.

The bottle had been purchased from a sweet shop located close to the jewellery store. During questioning, the shopkeeper said that the bottle was taken from a pack stored in the freezer and that it appeared to be no different from the other bottles on sale. Neither the sweet shop nor the jewellery store had any reason to suspect it contained acid, the shopkeeper added.

Officials are examining whether the incident was the result of negligence, accidental misplacement or deliberate tampering.

The CCTV footage from the jewellery shop, which has surfaced online, is being examined along with forensic evidence. Investigators are also awaiting the forensic analysis of the bottle and the woman's medical report to determine how acid ended up inside what appeared to be a sealed bottle of drinking water.
