Thiruvananthapuram: Though the government had decided earlier not to impose load shedding in the state to resolve the power crisis,  some damage control measures have been taken up at the local levels. Transmission Circle Deputy Chief Engineers have been given instructions to control the distribution of power in their respective areas according to the situation. 

Palakkad Transmission Circle Deputy Chief Engineer has issued a circular saying that if the power consumption would go up beyond the capacity during the peak hours, KSEB would be forced to switch off the transmission lines between 7 pm and 1 am. As per this, there would be intermittent power disruptions during this period. 

Since the threat of heat wave looms large over many areas in the state, the power consumption rate could not be controlled. On Thursday, the power consumption in the state was 5854 mw. To meet this, KSEB had spent 11.42 crores of units, which is an all time record. 

The production and transmission network of KSEB has the capacity of handling only 5800 mw which includes 4200 mw brought from outside the state and 1600 mw produced in the state. If the power consumption during the summer goes beyond this limit, state could not bring in additional power from outside.  This would result in disruption of power at many places due to excessive consumption.  It is expected that the crisis would be continued till the monsoon rains would arrive.

Electricity minister K Krishnankutty has said that, the local level restrictions would be implemented only if found necessary. “Power disruption would be there for only a few minutes. That too, only if found necessary”, he said.
