Kalikavu: The government kitty received a good amount when the seized vehicles were auctioned in four districts. Malappuram district received Rs 5.4 crore from the auction. When the 18% GST is added, it will cross Rs 6 crores. Scrap worth Rs 67 lakh was sold in Thrissur and Alappuzha bagged Rs 47 lakh.
Police stations in Malappuram still have more vehicles parked in their premises, mostly captured during illegal mining of river sand. Revenue department also has claimed authority over these vehicles.
The minimum rate for the scrap is set by the government. Earlier, the bidders used to plan together and buy the scrap for a cheaper price. They then sell it and share the amount. However, the rise of professional companies in this field ended this practice.
Manjeri based Rigel Orion Demolishing Company secured the deals from three districts. The total amount will cross Rs 10 crore when the auction in Malappuram is completed, company MD Jubin said.
