
New Delhi: A petition, calling for the cancellation of the appointment of Baselios Mar Thoma Mathews III as the head of Malankara Orthodox church, has been submitted in the Supreme Court. The plea has also sought to nullify all decisions taken by him after he took charge as the head of the Orthodox church.
The pleas also states that a stay order must be issued to halt the measures to select seven priests as metropolitans of Orthodox church.
The episcopal consecration of the appointed priests was meant to be conducted on February 25. The lawyer appeared for the petitioners who are Jacobites requested to consider the plea urgently. However, the bench presided by Justice Indira Banerjee ruled that the request can be heard only after three weeks.
The court sent notices to the Orthodox church, state chief secretary and DGP following the plea filed by Jacobite believers.
