Sabarimala: Bio-toilets installed along the pilgrimage routes to the Sabarimala temple, meant to provide relief to devotees climbing the hills, are proving difficult to use due to inadequate lighting.

The toilets are located along the Swami Ayyappan Road and Chandranandan Road.

Devotees climbing the steep paths expressed frustration, saying it is nearly impossible to use the toilets in the dark. “Sir, how can we use it when it’s completely dark inside with the door closed?” asked one pilgrim.

Actor Santhosh Keezhattoor, who visited Sabarimala two days ago, highlighted the issue on Facebook, noting, “Bio-toilets have been installed along the hill paths. Many are non-functional. The authorities should ensure they are made operational as soon as possible.”

A total of 42 bio-toilets have been set up along the pilgrimage paths. Only a few of the recently installed toilets are equipped with functioning light bulbs.

As a result, many devotees are unable to use the toilets and are forced to relieve themselves outside, causing unhygienic conditions and foul odor in certain areas. The issue was raised at a recent review meeting by Sannidhanam officials, but no decision has been taken yet regarding corrective measures.
