The family was allegedly under financial distress following threats after a loan payment was defaulted

Pathanamthitta, Kerala: A woman was reported dead after three members of a family in Kodumon, Pathanamthitta, allegedly attempted to die by suicide on Monday.
Leela, a native of Randamkutty, Kollam, died in the incident.
Her husband, Neelambaran, and son, Dhipin, were found to have overdosed on pills and were admitted to Kottayam Medical College Hospital.
Police said the family was under financial strain. A relative and a ward member alleged that employees of a non-banking finance company had come to the house and threatened them.
According to the relative, the family had taken a loan from ESAF and had been repaying it regularly. The person said that after a default in payment, individuals arrived on a bike and issued threats.
One relative stated that the family was mentally distressed due to the financial burden. The person added that they had decided to end their lives on Sunday evening but backed out when Dhipin said he was scared.
Meanwhile, police said Leela died in the adjacent room on Monday morning, after which Dhipin and his father may have consumed the pills. When officers arrived at the scene, the family disclosed details of their financial obligations but did not admit to having taken the pills.
Police only found this later during investigation. The two were admitted to hospital with assistance from relatives.
Leela's body will be handed over to her family after the post-mortem. Her relatives said they plan to protest with the body in front of the financial institution.
