Coimbatore: Kerala dam security review panel member and former deputy chief engineer Sudheer Padikkal termed the snag in Parambikulam dam as something unprecedented in India.
According to him, 27 feet long shutters weighing around 35,000 tons along with counterweight and chains were washed away in turbulent waters.

Meanwhile, water department officials from Tamil Nadu have initiated an inspection to fix the issue. But it is learnt that the attempt is challenging enough.
The dam is 1825 feet and the construction activities to fix the issue can be only started once the water level reaches 1,798 feet(crest). As per the available data, the water level touched 1,817.3 feet on Thursday at 9 AM.
The water is expected to reach 1,798 feet within three days. At least one month will be taken for completing the repair works as the damaged shutter, counterweight beams and chains should be replaced with new ones. But the delay in the work will affect Tamil Nadu’s water storage.
