A surprise inspection at 10 locations across Ernakulam, Thrissur and Palakkad uncovered weight, permit, and tax violations by quarry transporters

Kochi: The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) conducted a surprise inspection across Kerala targeting lorries transporting quarry products from Tamil Nadu, uncovering widespread overloading and regulatory violations. The operation led to the seizure of 55 vehicles and the collection of fines totalling ₹40.47 lakh in a single day.
The coordinated crackdown was carried out across 10 sites under the jurisdiction of the Central Vigilance Range. Raids took place at three locations each in Ernakulam and Thrissur districts, and four in Palakkad, following reports that police and Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) officials were allegedly turning a blind eye to violations.
Multiple departments imposed penalties during the operation. The MVD levied fines amounting to ₹19.82 lakh for overloading, while the Department of Mining and Geology collected ₹19.11 lakh for transporting quarry materials without valid permits. The GST Department imposed an additional ₹1.53 lakh in fines on vehicles found operating without paying applicable taxes.
In Ernakulam, seven vehicles were seized after operators failed to produce valid documentation. These were handed over to the respective departments for further legal proceedings.
Officials said the inspections would continue in the coming days as part of efforts to curb illegal transportation and protect public infrastructure.
