MVD launches "No Key for Kids" campaign in Ottapalam to combat underage driving with fines, awareness sessions, and strict enforcement.

Ottapalam: The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) is preparing to take strict action against underage driving in Ottapalam as part of its recently announced campaign, “No Key for Kids.” The initiative aims to raise awareness that driving without attaining the legal age is a punishable offence.
According to officials, the Enforcement Wing will carry out rigorous inspections, particularly around schools and other public places. The move comes in the wake of a recent incident in Kasaragod, where it was found that a 16-year-old was behind the wheel of a vehicle involved in an accident that claimed the life of an auto driver.
During the first phase of the campaign, those caught will be counselled. Both the underage driver and their parents will be required to attend special awareness sessions. However, repeat offenders will face severe consequences, including a fine of ₹10,000 for driving without a licence, and a fine of ₹25,000 or up to one year imprisonment for the parent or vehicle owner. Authorities also warned of possible cancellation of the vehicle’s registration and action under the Juvenile Justice Act.
Alongside inspections, the department also plans to intensify awareness campaigns through social media, conduct online opinion surveys on those who allow children to drive, and organise various outreach activities to curb the rising menace of underage driving.
