Malappuram: In a latest development, health authorities have confirmed the death of a young man from Nipah virus in the Malappuram district of Kerala. The confirmation comes from the results of tests conducted at the Pune National Virology Institute, which followed earlier preliminary positive results from the Kozhikode Medical College's laboratory.

The deceased, a student, had previously suffered from jaundice and sought treatment two months ago. After recovering, he returned to Bengaluru but came back to Kerala after sustaining an accident. He then developed a fever and sought medical attention, eventually leading to his death.

Health Minister, Veena George, announced that the young man, aged 24, had tested positive for the Nipah virus following his death in a private hospital. The initial suspicion of Nipah virus was raised by a medical officer after observing symptoms consistent with encephalitis. Subsequently, samples were sent to the Kozhikode Medical College for further testing, which confirmed the presence of the virus.

An emergency high-level meeting was convened under the Health Minister’s chairmanship immediately after the confirmation. The Minister has directed that all necessary protocols be followed. In response, 16 committees have been established to manage the situation. Additionally, samples have been sent to the Pune National Virology Institute for official verification, which corroborated the diagnosis.

So far, 151 individuals have been identified as primary contacts. The deceased had sought treatment at four private hospitals and had travelled with friends to various locations. Health authorities have collected detailed information on all these individuals and have placed those in direct contact into isolation.

Five individuals in isolation have shown mild symptoms, and their samples have been sent for testing. However, the Health Minister reassured that there is no cause for alarm. Efforts are in the final stages of contact tracing and monitoring to ensure that all potential cases are identified early and treated promptly to prevent further spread of the virus. The department has taken all necessary steps to ensure that no new infections occur and to safeguard public health.

Thiruvali and Mampad areas declared containment zones after Nipah confirmation

Although there is no immediate cause for alarm, the Collector has urged residents to remain vigilant and to wear masks as a precautionary measure.
