The aim of the discussions is to seek a pardon and negotiate a possible blood money settlement

New Delhi: The Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council has called for the urgent appointment of a diplomatic and mediation team to facilitate ongoing efforts to secure the release of Nimisha Priya, a Malayali nurse sentenced to death in Yemen. The Council is set to present this demand before the Supreme Court today (July 18, Friday).
The Council has proposed the formation of a six-member diplomatic and mediation team, specifically to initiate talks with the family of the slain Yemeni national, Talal. The aim of the discussions is to seek a pardon and negotiate a possible blood money settlement.
According to the proposal, two members of the team would represent the Action Council, and two others would be nominated from the group of Kanthapuram AP Abubakr Musliyar. The Council has named Advocate Subhash Chandran KR and Treasurer Kunjammad Koorachundu as its representatives. Dr Hussain Saqafi and Hamid have been proposed as delegates from the Markaz group. In addition, the Council is urging that two officials be appointed by the Central Government to complete the team.
Senior Advocate Rakend Basant and Advocate Subhash Chandran KR, who represent the Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council, are expected to raise this request before the Supreme Court during today’s hearing.
Meanwhile, the Central Government is also scheduled to brief the Supreme Court on the progress of negotiations aimed at securing Nimisha Priya’s release. Attorney General R. Venkataramani will provide the update on behalf of the government. Senior officials from the Ministry of External Affairs met with the Attorney General yesterday in preparation.
The Government of India is pursuing diplomatic efforts with the support of friendly nations and a prominent Sheikh with influence over local authorities in Yemen.
However, Abdu Fatah Mahdi, the brother of Talal, remains firm in his demand that Nimisha Priya’s death sentence be carried out. A spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs clarified yesterday that the ministry is unaware of any interventions made by Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar in efforts to postpone the execution.
