Kottayam: A woman who delivered a baby at her home without seeking medical assistance has been hospitalised after suffering heavy bleeding, while the body of the newborn was later found dead under a bed, police said.
The incident was reported in Kaduthuruthy, Kottayam district, where the woman reportedly gave birth at her residence on Saturday. By evening, she developed severe bleeding and was found in a weakened condition. Locals and ASHA workers rushed her to a private hospital in Muttuchira in an ambulance around 4 pm.
The doctors later confirmed that her condition was linked to post-delivery complications. Following information from hospital authorities, police reached the house and conducted a search, during which the newborn baby was found dead under the bed.
The infant, a baby boy weighing 3.1 kg, was described as healthy at birth. The woman is a 39-year-old mother of four children, and her husband is employed in a private firm.
Reports indicate that the woman did not cooperate with ASHA workers who had visited her during her pregnancy, raising concerns among officials.
Meanwhile, a post-mortem examination of the newborn is scheduled for Sunday. Kaduthuruthy police said they are investigating whether any lapse or other factors led to the incident. Further clarity is expected after the post-mortem report and detailed questioning of the woman, who remains under treatment.
Police have registered a case of unnatural death and are continuing the investigation, said SHO D. Rajeesh Kumar.
