Neyyattinkara: There is growing confusion and suspicion surrounding the death of an elderly man, Gopan Swami (81), from Aralumoodu in Neyyattinkara, with relatives and locals calling for a post-mortem. While his family members claim he passed away peacefully and was buried as per his wishes, others have raised concerns about the circumstances, urging authorities to conduct an investigation.

According to the family, Gopan Swami had chosen to be 'buried in samadhi' at his home, a form of spiritual entombment, with his children stating that it was his final wish. However, the authorities have decided to carry out a post-mortem on the body.

For years, Gopan Swami had been involved in religious activities at a Shiva temple adjacent to his house. Locals knew him as a devout follower of Lord Shiva. Around three months ago, after falling ill, Gopan Swami reportedly told some villagers and the local ward member, "When I die, please entomb me in samadhi." This request was later confirmed by his family members, including his wife and children.

The family had prepared the place for his burial, where he was laid to rest in a stone-built tomb. Gopan Swami had apparently told his wife and children that the samadhi should be completed first, and only after that should the villagers be informed.

His children have stated that their father believed this form of burial was the only way to reach a divine presence. According to them, this belief led  them to carry out the samadhi rituals without informing the local community or even the ward member.

Gopan Swami passed away around 11 AM the previous day, and his children claim they carried out the post-death rituals and entombed him by night. However, locals claim that only his wife, children, and daughters-in-law were present for the rituals.

Later, posters were put up in the area by his son, announcing his death and burial. This caught the attention of villagers, who then called the ward member to investigate. Upon questioning the family, locals noted that the two sons gave contradictory statements, which led to further suspicions. This prompted the community to report the incident to the Neyyattinkara police.

Police have begun an investigation after collecting statements and have sealed the area where Gopan Swami was entombed. Authorities are expected to exhume the body for a post-mortem soon. Locals have also raised concerns about possible occult practices being carried out at the temple, where prayers were reportedly held between 2 and 3 AM. They have accused some individuals of engaging in black magic activities.

The investigation into Gopan Swami’s death is ongoing as police continue to gather evidence.
