Kumily: Due to heavy rains at night, the water level in Mullaperiyar Dam rose againĀ and as a result the five shutters of the dam were raised.
At present, a total of six shutters ofĀ the dam are open. The shutters are raised to 60 cm and 3,005 cubic feet water is being released. The water level is at 138.95 feet. The five shutters of the dam, which were opened last week, were shut on Tuesday asĀ the water level in the Mullaperiyar dam starting to drop.
Meanwhile, sub-supervisory committee of Mullaperiyar dam instituted by the Supreme Court inspected the dam on Tuesday. Central Water Commission executive engineer Sharavana KumarĀ and Water Resource Department officialĀ NS Praseed and Hari Kumar represented Kerala. While Tamil Nadu PWD officials Sam Irvin and Kumar represented their state.
Amid this, IndiaĀ Meteorological Department(IMD) has forecastĀ that SouthĀ IndiaĀ is likely to receive above normal rainfall ā over 122 per cent of its long period average ā in November. āRainfall for November over theĀ SouthĀ PeninsularĀ IndiaĀ (Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala andĀ southĀ interior Karnataka) is most likely to be above normal (>122 per cent of long period average ),ā it said. Notably, eight districts in Kerala have been issued yellow alert.
The low-pressure area formed in Bay of Bengal at present is over KanyakumariĀ and other nearby regions. There are reports that within 24 hours, low-pressure area will be over south-eastern part of Arabian Sea and inĀ the next 48 hours it isĀ likely to beĀ more intenseĀ travelling through north and north-western regions.
