Thodupuzha(Kerala): The Moolamattom Power House will remain shut for maintenance from November 11 for one month, leading to an estimated daily shortfall of 600 MW of electricity.

The powerhouse, often described as Kerala’s “energy temple,” contributes nearly one-third of the state’s total power generation. The maintenance work, originally scheduled for July, was postponed due to heavy rainfall. The upcoming repair works will include replacing valve seals in the penstock pipes, officials said.

Authorities, however, do not expect a power shortage during the shutdown, as the maintenance coincides with the rainy season when electricity consumption remains relatively low.

Meanwhile, the Idukki Dam water level has reached 2,385.74 feet, close to its maximum capacity of 2,403 feet, leaving around 15 feet of storage space. Officials said if heavy rains persist and water release to the powerhouse remains halted, the shutters of the Cheruthoni Dam may need to be lifted to manage the rising water levels.
