New Delhi: The Union Cabinet is reportedly set to discuss on Tuesday the proposal to rename Kerala as “Keralam” in all official records, multiple media outlets have reported.

The move follows a unanimous resolution passed by the Kerala Legislative Assembly in 2024, urging the Union Government to officially change the state’s name in English to align with its native Malayalam pronunciation. Later, on June 25, 2024, the Assembly passed the resolution for a second time after the Union Home Ministry, which had reviewed the initial resolution, recommended certain technical amendments.

Interestingly, this development comes as the state prepares for the upcoming assembly elections, although the Election Commission of India has not yet announced an official date.

Last month, BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking intervention to implement the renaming.

Chandrasekhar emphasised that the BJP views the state, with its rich cultural and historical legacy, as better represented by the name “Keralam.”

On June 25, 2024, the assembly passed the resolution for the second time because the Union Home Ministry, which reviewed the first resolution, suggested some technical changes.
