Kannur Central Jail faces scrutiny as police investigate the smuggling of 30+ mobile phones, including iPhones, to inmates. A special team probes the methods and network behind the illicit activity

Kannur: Police have launched an investigation to uncover how mobile phones are reaching inmates inside the Central Jail. Under the supervision of the Kannur City Police Commissioner, a special investigation team has been formed, led by ACP Pradeepan Kannippoyil.
Over the past year, police have seized nearly 30 mobile phones, including iPhones, from the prison. 14 cases have been registered by the Town police in connection with the incidents. According to officials, power banks, earbuds, chargers, and phones were also found.
The issue came into focus after the escape of Govindachami from the Kannur jail, who later disclosed that mobile phones were easily accessible inside the jail. Following this, a raid led by the Jail DIG recovered three smartphones.
Recently, the Town police arrested a three-member gang who had been throwing mobile phones and narcotic substances over the prison walls. According to police, the accused admitted they were paid ₹1,000 for each delivery. The “orders” were allegedly placed through friends of the inmates, and the supplies reached prisoners across all political affiliations.
Authorities also uncovered that some inmates had hidden phones in highly unusual spots. In one case, three phones were found concealed at the top of a coconut tree near the sixth block of the jail. The discovery was made during a night inspection, when officials noticed a light coming from the tree and grew suspicious.
