Thrissur: For the first time in Kerala, an android application has been developed for electricity meter reading. The new system is implemented by Thrissur Corporation at a cost of Rs 5 lakh. Thrissur corporation is the only local body in the state that has license for power supply.

The mobile app was developed by Kannur-headquartered Dinesh IT Systems. The source code and data base of the corporation's electrical software is handled by Dinesh IT Systems. This software is modified to link with mobile app for meter reading.

In order to implement the new system, a QR code will be fixed on the electricity meter. When the meter reader is scanned using mobile app, the consumer’s details will be available. Also the reading can be directly recorded to the database of the electricity department of the corporation.

The new system will help save time and also enable paperless meter reading. Also sending electricity bill to the registered mobile number of the consumer will soon be realised. The project has been submitted for the government’s approval.

At present, Spot Billing Machine (SBM) is used for meter reading. The KSEB staff record the machine reading and instantly print the bill for the consumer. The reading is uploaded in the software after the billing machine is connected with the office computer.
