Kochi: Kunnathunad MLA PV Sreenijan, who currently serves as the chairman of the Ernakulam District Sports Council, will be relieved of his duties. CPM has decided against holding the position of MLA and sports council chairman simultaneously, necessitating Sreenijan's resignation from the sports council. This decision was made during the district secretariat meeting held on Thursday.

The recent controversy surrounding the Kerala Blasters' selection trials further contributed to the decision. The gate to the Panampally Nagar ground, where the trials were scheduled, was locked by MLA Sreenijan citing non-payment of rent for nearly eight months. As a result, the aspiring young participants were left stranded on the highway. State Sports Council chairman U Sharafali later intervened to address the situation.

CPM district secretariat meeting, presided over by state secretary MV Govindan, also discussed the report submitted by the AK Balan-TP Ramakrishnan Commission, appointed by the party to investigate the defeat in the Thrikkakara by-election. The report indicated irregularities in the candidate selection process. While the commission's findings were acknowledged, no immediate action was taken against any individuals. Criticism was also directed at LDF Convener EP Jayarajan for allegedly not cooperating with the inquiry commission.
