Kozhikode: Kerala Tourism Minister Muhammad Riyas has announced that the landslip-affected areas in Vilangad, Kozhikode, will undergo a detailed examination by an expert team. This will be followed by a comprehensive rehabilitation process. He revealed that drone inspections have identified over 100 epicentres of the landslips.
The minister confirmed that the expert team, comprising geologists, hydrologists, soil conservationists, and hazard analysts, will arrive on Monday for a scientific inspection.
The District Collector has been tasked with assessing the damage to houses, including determining the number of homes that have become uninhabitable. Additionally, the Collector has been instructed to take action to clear stones and trees from rivers in the four village panchayats affected by the landslips.
Revenue Minister K. Rajan, stated that he is awaiting the District Collector's detailed final report. He said that plans are to use the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and that the Chief Minister has been informed about the seriousness of the situation.
Meanwhile, MP Shafi Parambil has called for the creation of a master plan to resettle disaster victims in a safe, township-style location. He also urged that assistance, including houses offered by generous donors for Vilangad, be coordinated with this master plan and presented as a comprehensive package.
MLA E.K. Vijayan highlighted that thousands of trees and tons of stones have fallen into the Vanimal, Nadapuram, and Edacheri rivers following the landslips. He noted that if these obstructions are not removed urgently, the rivers may change course. The MLA also requested that a monthly stipend be allocated to disaster victims whose livelihoods have been disrupted.
District Collector Snehil Kumar Singh stated that a report on rehabilitation will be submitted after identifying potential landslip centres in the region. The report will include not only estimates by the relevant departments but also assessments gathered through direct consultations with affected individuals. The Collector added that decisions regarding the rehabilitation area can only be made after a thorough structural assessment.
